Re: understanding cylinders chrome?
They have a thin chrome plating on the cylinder walls....very common with many brands. They can be "lightly" honed to reduce tiny scratches. Any scratches that will catch a fingernail probably should be re-chromed. Sometime in the early 90's, most of the manufacturers switched to Nikasil p...

Power Jet style , or regular Mikuni's?
Engine otherwise all stock? Stock twin pipes?
AND, are you going to use an airbox?
Any idea what jets and needle are in the carbs?...and, did it run with them?

Re: Heavy steering.
I thought of a couple other things....unique to the '83 Vmax. The oil injection pump is very rich....Yamaha cut the oil output for the '84, and later years, nearly in half....They sure weren't taking any chances with warranty issues when they unveiled the new Vmax in 1983. and, they really did...

Re: Heavy steering.
Glad to hear you're goin thru the old sled, particularly installing new crank seals. Couple things I can pass on, after owning my '83 since 1989.... Yamaha was EXTREMELY conservative with the new Vmax when it was introduced for the '83 model year...understandable after having some problems with the ...

Re: Heavy steering.
I have owned my '83 Vmax since 1989, and have found it to be one of the most pleasant, easy steering sleds, so it can definitely be done. But, it is the only TSS sled I have ever ridden, so can't speak to any of the other models. When the '83 SRV and Vmax came out, they included a new rear suspensio...

Re: '81 SRX 440 track
Fortunately, the 1981 SRX and Vmax's used one of the most common tracks that was ever made in the sled industry. 121" long, 15" wide 2.52 pitch...which matches the stock drivers I think you're right on the lug height being close to 3/4 inch. You can use these specs to find a good, used tra...

Re: Help Figuring out Registration Origin
Just for your info, I took a look at my sleds registration #'s. 75 SnoJet registered around 1980....14-37775 79 Kawasaki registered around 1983....14-38153 83 Vmax registered around 1990....14-75256 So, your sled was probably registered in the late '80s. I can't swear that no other state in the unio...

Re: State of The Union Excuse ...
Thomas Jefferson...oh, my...how we could benefit from his presence today! Astonishing to think how the founding fathers compromised on their differences and formed a " More Perfect Union". Certainly they were all human, with various character flaws, as we all have...but what a stark contra...

Re: Help Figuring out Registration Origin
I would try googling "Indiana snowmobile registration," ....that will direct you to the part of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles that issues the snowmobile registrations. Hopefully you don't run in to a PITA "bureaucrat" type person. Another place to try would be the Indiana ...

Re: Help Figuring out Registration Origin
I live in Indiana. All of my sleds registered many years ago (79 Kawasaki, 83 Vmax) have similar numbers. I'm at work and I can't remember the exact #'s, but they were all like 14 37775 or 14 36638. I bet it was registered in Indiana at some time.

Re: State of The Union Excuse ...
WHAT??? Everything is so much BETTER now...what are you thinkin'?? No, I didn't waste my time watching, just goin' by the news accounts today. I, for one, certainly have a warm, fuzzy feeling from the pep talk dribbling down from on high about how much better the middle-class is now. I used to think...
