Are V-max Cylinders cast iron sleeved, Nikisil, or Chromed??

Post by 80zfreak »

I just bought a 1986 V-max that is siezed up. I have not tore into it yet, looking into the Ports it would appear to be sleeved. I was wondering if it can be bored out or if I have to have the cylinders rechromed or Nikisiled if they are in bad shape? Thanks

Vmax cylinders

Originally, the 540 Vmax cylinders used a chrome plated bore. However, many of these have been replaced by cast iron sleeves over the years due to the cost of having the originals replated or replaced. If your cylinders have been sleeved, you will be able to over-bore and use aftermarket replacement pistons. If they're still the original chrome plating, you will have to either have the damaged one (ones) replated or you'll have to find some good used replacements. Good luck.
