I know the P word is not allowed here i get it lol!!! I have a Y.P.Z. clutch that is on the vmax now but was told that this clutch might not fit the taper on the crank properly, I am going to put machinists dye on the crank to make sure it fits nicely but i am looking for other options for the future hence the question" Polaris clutch on a vmax. Has anyone else used a Y.P.Z. clutch on there Vmax. Any input is greatly appreciated. Jeff

I know my father-in-law has a polaris clutch on his v-max. I know he had to have the secondary machined to fit widebelt, but I can't remember if he had the clutch machined also.
If you look at the taper I think they are the same 30mm 1:10.

Yes I was being a smart @$$. Any clutch with a standard 30mm taper will go on a Vmax including the P-85 although there are different bore depths that could give you some trouble. The one on my mod is off an XLT and it runs real close to the frame but will work. I also have the jackshaft that allows me to run the matching secondary so belt width isn't an issue for me. It would be if I were using the stock secondary. If you want to go with the P-85 and are going to use a Yamaha secondary I would get one off an Exciter II or something else that has the large (overdrive) secondary. It will match up better (diameter wise) with the P-85 and you can use the stock XLT belt for lenght. The P-85 is an exellent clutch that is very tunable and parts are easy to get. Polaris also has spring and weight charts with all the specs on them along with graphs that show how they work with eachother. There is nothing wrong with Yamaha clutchs but springs and weights are expensive and they don't give you any specs on them so it's much harder to figure out where to start.

I really appreciate the help with this clutch issue by the way!!! I just wanna get this sled rockin again, i,m assuming i have a stock VMAX secondary and my primary is a Yamaha Y.P.Z. it engages around 4000 with a blue ploaris spring in it and revs to near 7600 if i remember correctly. I,m realizing now with ur help that my secondary might not match my primary which makes sense. Your jackshaft!!!!!! What kind is it? Is it off an Indy as well????? or is it a vmax one?? I,m weighing my options right now and i,m gonna try a few things with this YPZ clutch for now, maybe try to find the matching secondary but i do have acess to alot of P_______ parts, and a machine shop! so i have options there as well.

Stock engaugement is around 4200 and and shifting is 8000 to 8400. They seem to like a little more if you do any racing. The jackshaft I have was made for the Vmax's back in the day to adapt Cat/Polaris style standard and roller secondarys to the Vmax for racing. It's standard Yamaha on the chaincase end but setup at 1" diameter with a 1/4" keyway on the clutch end. I don't know who made them but they were also made for many other Yamaha's. They might still be available today but I'm not sure where to look. I will check into it to see it I can find something.

They are .970 at the splines and .985 at the inside step where the bearing rides.

Jeff, I have a 1995 Phazer II and the secondary clutch slides right on, this is the larger diameter secondary for use with the newer style YXR(?) primary found on the Exciter and Phazer II's. I wonder if the 1994-96 reverse clutches found on the Vmax 5/600's would also, fit the shaft ?

it took some time to get it right lots of shimming and moveing the motor but I finally got it,the clutch is real close to the frame but it fits and requires a new longer secondary bolt, let me know what you think.

you must be into racing that sled?????????
That looks pretty cool, i,m not one to condemn another brand because they all have there good and bad points as long as it does the job.
