87 Vmax ski selection. PLEASE HELP

Post by dep24 »

OK. I bought an 87 Vmax. $200.00, hard to start cold but runs great. :D Here is the dilema. I broke a ski. Looked up what ski it should take. 10-64 or 08-328 depending on which brand right. Ya, not so much. All of the sites selling skis clearly indicate this ski for the 87. The 83-86 call for 10-63 in Steffes. Heres where i get lost. It calls for 08-328 in Kimpex for 83-86* and 87-97. Now the * on the 83-86 is a bolt spacer kit. Reason? It seems the 83-86 has a smaller foot thing for lack of a better term at the end of the shock. Well, my 87 does also. Is it possible that this one was made so early in the 87 year that they were still using some 86 parts? Anyway. If someone has had this experience before, let me know what you did. I need skis and am a little lost as to what to order. Thanks.

Hello check your Vin# on the side of tunnel against "What year is your Vmax" from the Article Index. Chances are it's not a 1987 which are kinda rare.

The 83 - 87 Vmax have the same size FOOT THING ,the 88 on up Vmax ( Canadian) and the 88 up SRV & Exciter take a bigger FOOT THING because they take a differant strut . The 87 Vmax ski has a round ski loop like the Exciter & SRV , the 83 - 86 have a ski loop with the flat top with rubber covers. The 87 Vmax and 87 Exciter & SRV use the same ski. The aftermarket sells skis with the spaces so they can make just one ski to fit the smaller and larger FOOT THING and just add the spacers . I hope this helps !

According to the Yamaha parts catalog the ski bracket is the same part # 8L9-237E-00-00 from 1983- 1987 the 87 didn't go to the wider bracket.

Love the look of the aluminum skis. I like the looks of the earlier V-Max skis (rubber tipped). I even orderd several sets of those rubber ski tips. I know you can still get them through Yamaha. Brad
