Yep, what's with them? Everything else on Yammi's always looks and is very well made. Didn't know if my 83 Max was unique, but you can pull the recoil (notice I said pull, not yank) until the pawls engage, then pull to start it. Sometimes it engages O.K., then the next pull you can pull a foot and a half of rope out until it engages. I have tried pulling slowly, and quickly, etc. No diff. (Nothing looks worn in the recoil, and it's been this way for years). I have cleaned the innards of the recoil assembly and lightly lubed the pawls and springs, but that's just the way it is, I guess. Never broken the recoil (yet)...can't wait to try to wind the spring back up, etc. Like Vmax540 said....
