I believe (?) I was told in 1994 that the Vmax4's rear suspension travel was increased by moving the front arm mounting position on the rail to the top hole. The one picture is from my 1986 Vmax540.

I purchased the shock that Chuck suggested from HPE. The first initial look, the new shock looked just like what I needed, the same as the 1983. Upon further inspection the difference is in the spring height adjustment. The new shock (VMax 4 shock) is 3/4" shorter where the spring fits. I have needed this shock and I had something in my hand that was close so I started in on it. I turned the top of the lower aluminum adjustment down in the lathe and then I turned the top spring retainer to give me a bit more clearance. I gained just over a 1/4" so the difference was less than 1/2". You can see in the photo the original shock spring is adjusted nearly as tight as it will go and the new shock is as low as it goes and they are about the same. I then went to put it in the rear skid and found my next issue with the rear shock mount. Had to do some grinding to get the top spring retainer to clear the mount. Tried the set up on Saturday and seems much beter. Thanks to Chuck and Tyler for this great site, I would have long since given up on the V Max if it were not for this site.
