I had to remove the engine to replace the gear housing on my '83. As long as it was out, I decided to tear the motor down to replace all the seals. While it was apart I decided to do some mild porting on my intake and exhaust ports. Go here for pics; http://www.standupjetski.com/vmax.htm One crankshaft bearing was bad as well so I ordered a crank off ebay. I own a couple of freestyle stand-up jetskis and cleaned up the casting on their motors and they have always performed awesome.

those are some interesting graphics on your 83... look like someone must have cut off the red part... usually when people modify their graphics and or paint i think it is a bad idea but i like that
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!
