81 SRX play in the steering.

Post by rlester »

Hey guys,

I don't post much, but lurk often! My son has been riding our 81 SRX for a few years now, with ZERO issues. Gas and oil. That's it. We have put around 1000kms on it since we got it, and the only upgrade we have bothered with is a 1 inch track.

Anyway, there is a fair bit of play in the steering now, and it seems to be coming from the ski area. You can see the tie rods moving correctly, but the bolts that hold the ski to the strut, and the others above it have some play. End result is about three inches of play at the handlebars.

Is there a shim kit available, or some new bolts/spacers etc?

Thanks,

R.

I know about the bushing, but I'm not too worried about that at the moment as there is hardly any play there. 90% of the play is in the ski/suspension area outside of the chassis.

-T.S.S. Maintenance
On most every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are frozen and completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !

My front end was in bad shape and when I took it apart it got looser. I took a 1/2" drill bit and drilled out all the pivots and then made each inner bushing on the lathe. The other way to deal with it, there is someone on Vintage sleds classifieds that is selling full replacement inner and outer bushings for $70.00. I would get the complete kit, would have saved me three evenings on the lathe.

Heres a link http://srv540.proboards.com/index.cgi?b ... 607&page=1 to some good pix's of a guy doing it to his SRV. The thread has all kinds of work he's doing but page 1 & 2 show this. Hope it helps

I just fixed my steering play. It is not in the bushings. As the steering post goes down behind the air box/ carbs there is a clamp that holds the steering post rigid to the tunnel. I am sure the two bolts are loose causing the play. Tighten these bolts and the play goes away.
