Coolant System Refill Process

Post by velocity »

Hi Guys,

I just changed head gaskets/O-Rings on my 87, and I need to refill the cooling system. I'm thinking of the following. Slightly elevating the front of the machine, letting it run while filling the radiator, and keep filling until the rear heat exchanger is warm and the level stabilizes. Am I off base, or is there another/better way of doing this??? The whole system didn't drain down, but I lost a good amount...

Any advice would be appreciated!!!!

There is a bleeder on the rear exchanger under the seat. I do not believe it is necessary to use the rear unless there is no circulation to the rear such as an air bubble which in that case you would lift the rear and open the bleeder.

yeah ive always had good luck just filling the radiator back up and taking a few laps around the yeard and then checking it... maybe adding a little... but then again i dont run a thremostat.... either way you shouldnt have too much trouble getting it full again... they hold less than a gallon from what i remember so dont expect to get much in
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

The proper way is to bleed the engine at the T-stat housing and then raise the rear of the sled and bleed at the rear heat exchanger. Air in the system causes circulation problems and doesn't always work it's way out.

Be safe. Bleed properly.
