my 86 allmost done

Post by Vmxhunter »

Hey guys...Just some new photos of my 86 here. I got a correct hood on her now (last winter I had a 81 SRX hood, with the decals removed). I just got the sled put back together. Had to replace that oil seal by the tach cable (AGAIN!!!). And a new oil injection cable. And I just put 2 coats of wax on the hood yesterday. Hood still has some scuffs if you look close at it. But much better than what it was.

I'm thinking about putting the original windshield back on. But, it has some of the normal cracks on each side. And the "YAMAHA" decal on that windshield is bubbling up.

Also, I'm thinking about recharging the TSS front shocks with nitrogen at the dealer. To me, the sled looks like it's sitting kind of low...What do you guys think? And I was thinking about putting in a shim kit in the front. But I never did that before.....How does a person know where which shims, go where?

Looking Good ! The shims come in different thickness'es and replace the same as stock and add shims to take up any slop. The key is to Not over tighten and after you ride it a couple times recheck.

F.Y.I.
On every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are almost frozen or completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !

I agree on the knuckles, I grease mine every year and have never had any problems, the TSS was one of the best suspensions back then I think it was one of those things that worked so good that people didn't even think much about them, and the magazines were to busy talking about Polaris that Yamaha's didn't get much credit. And that 86 looks great !! GOOD JOB!!!

Hey thanks!!! Sorry the photos were fuzzy. Don't know why. Never had an issue with that camera before. I'll try for some more photos soon. I got 2 shim kits this week from Dennis Kirk. One for my sled. And one for the boys 86 SRV you can see in one photo.

Question?????......Was there some kind of bushing were the bolt goes through the ski on each side of the ski? I seen on the parts breakdown. That there should be one on each side. But my sled doesn't have any. And, if I tried to put some in. I can't see how they could fit. There is no room between that cast aluminum "shoe" and the ski.

Also, tring to figure out how to fix those cracks in my original windshield. I would love to put it back on. But it's cracked on both sides. It's the original dark smoked windshield. With the "YAMAHA" decal on. And it's looks better with it's shape than the sno-stuff windshield that's on it now.
