Snowrail made with VMAX parts

I had an idea last spring to put my sand rail on tracks and skis.

After collecting parts for about 8 months, we got the pieces together and into the shop two weeks ago.
The tunnels and drive axles are from an SRV and an XLV.
The skid frames and tracks are from VMAXs.
I expect to find and install some taller skid frames over the summer.

There are a few bugs in the configuration right now:
1. The camber and toe settings that worked with the paddle tires are totally out of line with the tracks installed. The rear axle alignment needs to be adjusted.
2. One of the tracks has carbide points in it and they are chewing up the concrete where we were working. I have another track without carbides that will be more compatible with the workspace.
3. When I backed up to turn around, the tracks ate the flaps. The flaps need to come off. The video leaving the shop and turning right shows the flaps in the original location and the second video is after I backed over them and sucked them under the tracks.
4. I have not installed the traction bars therefore the fronts of the tracks come up when accelerating and go down when decelerating. This is very obvious from watching the first video.
5. I cut the belly pan off to save space at the front of the tunnel. The front of the tunnel rubs on the ground when decelerating. I will be cutting the bottom edge of the tunnels up about two inches and radiusing them with about 1 inch pipe.
6. The entire width is 107 inches. Legal width in the state of Washington it 102 inches. I need to figure out how to narrow the vehicle by at least 5 inches and/or buy a $20 overwidth permit and/or expect to remove one (or both) track assemblies when transporting it.

I hope to get it out on the trails in the mountains next weekend.

We installed new rear wheel bearings and got the rear axles aligned today.

If you look at the video, you can see that the axles support significantly more weight and stay pointed in the right direction even under acceleration and braking. The two people in the rail add about 400 pounds to the gross weight and the axles sag about one degree each with their weight aboard. The axles were aligned with no one on board.

Tomorrow, I expect to get the ski adapters fabricated, the new axle seals installed and get the vehicle on the trailer for transit.

I expect to be testing this vehicle in the mountains this weekend.
I expect to post some video from that event also.

Yes, we had fun.

Yes, things bent and fell off, but nothing broke.

We shot about 40 video sequences today. Some successfully and others not so well.

I will post more video sequences as I trim them before posting.

The biggest problem was getting the skis and tracks aligned. The tracks had not been aligned in the shop before loading the trailer. When we left the trailhead, we noticed a burnt rubber smell. As I zeroed in on centering the tracks, the smell went away and the rail would actually coast when the clutch was pressed. The skis were strapped onto the wheels and the straps kept slipping. By the end of the day, we figured out how to attach the straps so the skis would stay in place except during an impact.

Pretty cool Joe, I like how when the ski rotated, it self centered.
Hate to sound old, but if your going to cruz in comfort, next I see full enclosure, and a killer stereo :D

The ski will return to bottom center when traveling below walking speed. Above walking speed, it continues to spin until I slowed down below walking speed.

I have the fiberglass panels for the top, sides and over my legs. Installation is required.
The heater parts are here. It is to help dry out the footwell area. Assembly is required.
I'm not much of a music fan, therefore the tunes are not necessary.
I like the sound of the engine.
I want a windshield up to the top of the steering wheel to help keep snow out of my lap.

Does anyone have any ideas on were to get stronger coil springs for the VMAX rear shock? The track assemblies are sitting too low and I have the adjusters full tight on both shocks.

Washington mountains got another couple feet of snow the last two weeks and we got some more seat time in the Half Track Snow Rail.

This time we went up to Stampede Pass and Tacoma Pass.
The snow was powder in the shadows and Peanut butter in the sun.
We ran 38 miles before it started getting dark and we got cold, wet, hungry, tired, and sleepy.
