F.Y.I. You have to remember the odd thing about the stock temp guage is that it does Not register much if at all under normal operating temps but, will go up when you have an issue. =Poor O.E.M. setup. See the garage forum Tyler is working on a solution !

temp gauge

Post by VectorBoy »

Thanks for the input and It does make sense. It seemed like when I ran it hard the gauge went up a little bit but the next time I looked it was back down. I hope I dont have a issue and see the gauge come up. Thanks again

The 83 gauges were as Tyler said they didn't register much if at all. They were the same gauge as they used on the SRX's and they ran about 140 degrees or so,but when the came out with the 540 in the Vmax it only runs about 103 degrees or so ,so you can see why they didn't register much. They really were good gauges, they just didn't match the running temps of the new engine. In 84 yamaha came out with a new gauge to match the running temps of the 540 engine and they worked great ,I have one in my 83 and it runs about half way in the green ( there are no numbers on them just color codes). I would recommend anyone with a 83 to update to the newer gauge ( Yamaha should have updated them )IMO. Maybe this will help you out as the newer gauge should be easier to find.

testing temp gauge

Remove the sensor from the hose fitting, and warm it with a heat gun or pass the flame of a lighter under it. If the needle moves, it is working. You can also put it into boiling water at 212.

If it sat for ten years make sure the lines in and out are not pluged,I have had this happen on both my vmax"s and the temp gauge would not work.
