86 Vmax Resto

Post by mathis »

Hi from Norway.

New member here and bought a 86 Vmax 540 just recently. The rust has got a bite on it, but seems like the frame is quite good.
Haven't got further than to cleaning yet, but it will need new boggie, track, engine rebuild and other refreshment.

Are the other pro action boggies the same width as the original for Vmax 540? Exciter, SRV, Vmax 500/600... Or is the Vmax 540 tunnel too narrow for those?

You shouldn't have any problem finding wheels for it they are pretty much the same as other Yamaha's..

Anyone who have put a boggie from a 1998 or newer SRX into a Vmax?

Wondering how that would work.

Not sure on newer Yami stuff. I put a Pol. xtra 10 in mine, very happy easy to find because their were so many, watch for one with Fox shocks, their rebuildable and good. Also put on in my SRV, almost a bolt in swap. There are articles showing the new bolt locations of people will post them. Search here and the 540 SRV site been done lots of times. Look around, I paid just under 100 bucks both times

Congratulation with one of the few 86 left here in Norway. Keep it orignale with the "gold" rails :). I will try to use a company in Oslo, that clean both aluminium and steel with acid, for all my parts. Then powdercoat.

I have acid rust remover, Strip All. Will try that next weekend. http://www.drakechemicals.no
What company are you Arnelo using for powdercoating?

Measured the compression, was low on both. Chaincase side lowest at 50 and other side at 80.

Removed carbs, airbox, seat, exhaust and drained coolant this weekend.
Next up will be clutches and lift engine out of frame.

Hi Mathis. Looks like original clutch. Yamaha had comet primary clutch as default on this sleds. Around me, there is alot of companies that perform powdercoating. Are you member of norwegian facebook page snøscooter veteran og klassikere? Here you will find alot of other people with same interest.

hmm, have to get those clutches off to see if there are any id stamps on it.

The T.S.S. are stuck, probably rusted. Haven't got to look more closely at those. But will need to rebuild the shocks if possible.
Or aren't there any parts available anymore?

Often its the knee action on the struts that freezes up. Sometime soaking and working the bolts will do it, often it takes heat. I have drilled out reamed them for a larger size bushing and started over but it solved the problem

This engine will need new crank bearings and new pistons. Anyone know of a good supplier for crank bearings? Some of the bearings are not available anymore, but must be some SKF/Koyo bearings that matches the original...?

Can't help with bearings but front and rear suspension components are shared with SRV's of the same vintage.
