WHEN YAMAHA CLAIMED THIS SLED WAS NOT FOR THE NOVICE, THEY MEANT IT. WHEN THEY SAID THIS SNOWMOBILE WAS OVER ENGINEERED, THEY MEANT IT. MY SRX 440,S NEVER GAVE ME THE GRIEF THIS SLED HAS. Tony I here u I am going to put my 81 on the shelf after this year after last weekend I had it running good at the speed runs then it blew the water pump seal rebuild the motor again. Going out Sunday to try again .

I really havent had any serious issues with my 83 or my 81 yet other than the recoils are junk my 83 i replaced the cdi when igot it its been good for 4 yrs now the 81 i did the waterpump seal its been good since then of course they are stock.just add gas and oil and go.they are alot of fun to ride and every one checks out at my pitstops. however i did get another firechicken this fall that is my regular ride.got 1200 miles on so far this season compared to 200 last year

What is a fire chicken ag?? And Tony I dont know what the problem is with yours, Put everything to Yamaha specs...Tear down motor get the crank done ( world of difference on mine, straightened) New crank seals, make sure cylinders are good , good seals, rods, assemble....onto carbs set to factory spec, on everything, clean airbox (this could be your problem) The box is split in two and I took mine apart on the 88 vmax and it was caked with shit. New plugs and vowlaaaaa!! You have a one pull wonder....Stock pipes of course also.

Fire chicken aka. Walmart yamaha lol. I think cat guys are just cheap yamaha guys like myself that dont wanna spend on a yamaha. I have 550 EXT and I love it . You cant beat the ride on it... AG thats one nice cat Im thinking i should get one, I rode one last weekend and fell in love.

I shake my head wondering what the engineer's had in their minds when they designed the engine to drop into a Box frame instead of an open cradle.
-Jackshaft bearing mounted to the frame closing off access to easily remove airbox, carbs, fuelpumps......
-Polaris style recoil.
-6.3 Gal fuel tank (seriously......wow......)
-Two fuel pumps, lines, shutoff's.....take up more space....

Yeah the driveshaft thru the frame was a head scratcher.had to make my own clutch pullerfor my 81 to get the motor out couldn't find a puller. Kawasaki invaders were like that also

GUYS LOOK I LOVE THIS SLED. I HAD ORDERED A 82 SRX 500 IN SPRING OF 81. AT THAT TIME, I HAD A 79 SRX I BOUGHT NEW. I GUESS ITS LIKE THIS, ITS LIKE WORKING ON CARS IN THE LATE SIXTIES VS TODAY. THE VMAX 540 REALLY WAS THE FIRST SLED MADE THAT YAMAHA WANTED YOU TO TAKE TO YOUR DEALER FOR ANY SERVICE. CHRIS, I HAVE ALL WHAT YOU POSTED. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Had my 81 at the speed runs this weekend she ran the best in years a 87 88 88 and a 90 MPH run in 900 feet and it is still in one peice next week is a 1320 foot speed run see if picks up a few MPH

Pretty cool, all I need to fix mine up is two outside bearings and a piston cant find any NOS ones.
