Snow level report on the Olympic Mountains in Washington

Post by Joe »

I got a chance to get up to the mountains today in the Jeep.

Right at the bottom of the hill, we got pelted with quarter inch hail during a cloudburst. The sun came out several times between showers.

There was no snow up to 3400 feet but was knee deep at 3900 feet. The road we chose ended at 4000 feet, therefore we had very little room to play. There was definately no room to turn a snowmobile around. Turning the jeep around required using reverse gear twice.

The jeep would crawl up on the top of the snow and then break through suddenly with a Thunk. It felt like there was a crust when driving, but walking on it, there was no appearance of a crust. It was raining and we were happy to have a windshield, top, doors and a good heater.

This winter has been too predictable. The snow level goes to 3500 feet at night and then 4500 to 5500 during the day. It rains three days out of every four.

I would like some snow at sea level, but it may not happen this year.

I have seen snow at sea level here in May, therefore I know it is possible. I have not given up hope.
