When I had a problem running on one cylinder, I pull the muffler can to see and hear the pipes separately. If one carb is flooding out, there will be raw fuel spitting out the stinger. By covering the end of each pipe in turn, you can listen to the sound of the other cylinder to determine its health...

My neighbor runs an engine porting business out of his garage. He has lots of good results. He tells me that to make power, you need lots of air and the right amount of fuel. Efficiency comes from high compression. Like a garden hose, there are lots of places to restrict flow and reduce power. From ...

My 1986 Yamaha manual says to: 1. Torque to 85 foot pounds to seat the primary clutch on the crankshaft. 2. Loosen the bolt. 3. Torque to 50 foot pounds, the final torque. The Comet instructions agree with the Yamaha manual. In my experience, A. 50 foot pounds is a little too loose. I typically torq...

Pardon my ignorance of SRX design, but... Is that a 1 pint gas tank? Where do the water hoses go? Where is the oil tank? Is the radiator missing or relocated? Is it supposed to sit that low? Is that seat a LOT lighter and harder than stock? Those pipes look a LOT shorter than my 540 pipes. What is t...

Did I missunderstand you? Why are you pulling the engine to get at the stator? I have pulled my stator several times but only pulled the engine once. That was to lubricate the steering and clean the pan when the oil line broke. I drilled holes in the frame next to the starter to get a 1/4 inch socke...

I put a 1 3/16 track on my 86. I had to trim 3/16 inch in the area of the heat exchangers (10 mm left and right of the sprocket holes) so it would not rub. A photo is in an article in the archives. That would mean that a 1 inch track should fit with no clearance issues. I removed the center idler sh...

My original 102 spider is shot. The rest of it seems to be OK. The repair shop got me a new 108 for the price of the spider, rebuild kit and labor to rebuild it. He even set up the 108 for a VMX540 for the purchase price of the 108. They come from Comet as a disassembled kit and the dealer needs to ...

I wish my 86 sounded as good as your 83.
I still have the original bores and pistons.

early fall snowstorm
The weather station at Harts Pass reported a half inch of snow fell this morning. NOHRSC projected about three inches on the hills north of the pass inside the Pasayten wilderness area. National Weather Service has taken down their backcountry weather warnings. I just thought you might like to know ...
