Sounds like you have a bad lighting coil on the stator. Also check to make sure the wires on the stator aren't hitting ground, but my guess is it is a bad stator coil. As far as I know that was the only one they had for this sled. They used it from 83-up.

If I remember correctly the 82 SRX had both, the rear heat exchanger under the seat like the 81 & the rear exchanger across the back like the 83. I agree I would save it until you can find (if you can) the remaining 82 parts.

What makes this even more difficult to figure out is these are old sleds and who knows over the years the plungers could had been dropped and lost and were replaced with what ever they could get at the time. VMaxmark did you check when you had the carbs apart to see if maybe someone had replaced any...

I have had my Vmax sence new and they did have the needles on the choke plungers. I have two other sets of carbs, 84's and 85's and they also have those needles. My 88 Exciter also had them as well. Not trying to confuse you, just saying what I have seen.

Great looking sleds!! Wish I had the extra cash right now. 85 is the best looking of all the Vmax's IMO!!
