Re: Powerbloc in my 81 SRX

Yeah I realize this clutch isn't the best, but I'm just not in a position to spend the money on a new clutch. Yesterday I picked up a used spring that was a half inch taller than my original one. Strange, but the engagement stayed at 4500. Then I took out four weights from each puck, leaving one in ...

Powerbloc in my 81 SRX

My 81 SRX 440 has an older 3 puck powerbloc clutch in it. It works great for trail riding, we have put 1000kms on it and it has been flawless. Engagement is around 4500rpm. I would like to do some drag racing with it, and I need to raise the engagement close to 6000 (from the research I've been doin...

Re: 81 SRX play in the steering.

I know about the bushing, but I'm not too worried about that at the moment as there is hardly any play there. 90% of the play is in the ski/suspension area outside of the chassis.

81 SRX play in the steering.

Hey guys, I don't post much, but lurk often! My son has been riding our 81 SRX for a few years now, with ZERO issues. Gas and oil. That's it. We have put around 1000kms on it since we got it, and the only upgrade we have bothered with is a 1 inch track. Anyway, there is a fair bit of play in the ste...

Anybody ride this weekend?

My son took the 81 SRX, and I took one of the other "non Yamaha" sleds last weekend. Probably put on 4 kms, not a big ride, there isn't much snow here in the Edmonton area. Some of it melted during the week, so we wont be riding this weekend for sure. Maybe in the yard pulling the tubes th...

Re: Replacement Track for 83 Vmax

Last year we put a .9" track on our 81 SRX. It fit fine with some clearance to spare. Not sure if the 83 Vmax has the same clearances, but it fit on the 81 perfectly. It totally changed the characteristics of the sled. Its usable in powder now, and hooks up better off the line. It used to just ...

Re: 1981 Yamaha SRX 440 or 83-up Yamaha Vmax 540. Which is the b

My son rides our 81 SRX on the trails all the time, its pretty much stock except the clutch. It has a powerbloc clutch that engages at about 4000 rpm. As long as it stays cold outside, it performs flawlessly. If it gets warm, and close to the freezing mark, it has a noticeable bog on the bottom end ...

Re: The Infamous 1983 Pump Drive Gear seal for the water pump !

I need to change the water pump seal on my 81 SRX 440. The oil in the gearbox has a milky color to it. I know I have to pull the motor out to do it, but I'm wondering how long of a job this is? I'm a competent mechanic, have rebuilt several other sleds although I'm mainly an auto mechanic. I have th...

Re: Tunnel cooler leak.

I ended up taking the ends off the exchanger and making my own gaskets. It seems to be holding quite nicely. I had a roll of gasket material from my car fixing supplies and it only took about ten minutes to carve out some new gaskets. Next I have to pull the motor and change the water pump seal, the...

Re: Tunnel cooler leak.

I had a race between the SRX and the Wildcat earlier this year with the original track on the SRX, and it was almost no contest. The Wildcat was a fair bit quicker. It would be curious to see now with the better track how it performs. It seems to pull much better, and doesn't spin as much. Now that ...

Re: Tunnel cooler leak.

Just took the seat off and looked for the leak. Its leaking at the front of the cooler, on the bottom near one of the screws. Appears to be the gasket leaking. I'm thinking of fixing it right on the sled without removing the original rivets. I might as well reseal the other side too. Thoughts on doi...

Tunnel cooler leak.

Hey guys, Took the 81 SRX for a ride yesterday. Had a small bit of green on the snow before we left. Topped off rad, warmed up machine and could not see any leaks. Went for the ride and stopped for a break about ten minutes later. A fair bit of dripping so we headed back home. Once we got home, my s...

Re: Track change on my 81 SRX

Buried in these pics from a sled trip my son and I took a couple of weeks ago are some pics of the SRX. I must say, that new track made a HUGE difference in how the sled handles. I highly recommend upgrading to a one inch track. Now it rarely gets stuck, and if it does, its much easier to get out. O...

Re: Of all the stupid things....

Yeah, I think we will leave it in like that. We went for a 43 km trip today, the longest I've ever taken in one day. Best snowmobile trip of my life. No mechanical issues. The SRX did really well, my son drove it 90% of the time, and I had completely forgot that the track was on backwards while I wa...

Of all the stupid things....

My son and I finished putting the .9 inch track into the SRX tonight. I was literally putting in the last bolt. Chaincase filled, all bearings had been serviced etc. Well, it turns out we put the track on BACKWARDS. I thought I double checked the orientation when I put it in the other night, but I m...
