i.m.o. you NEED the thermostat installed to PROPERLY warm the engine, with the t-stat removed it over cools and causes cold sieze conditions depending on the coolant mixture,jetting outside temp. i used a 140deg t-stat and drilled a .015 hole in it to remove air bubbles i have never had it go over 1...

just my 2 cents here. i would try to add like a teaspoon full of #30 oil into each cylinder,pull it over slowly a couple times ,put fresh plugs in it then try to start. is the fuel fresh? i would be EXTREMLY careful using starting fluid.this could dry out the cylinder leading to much worse issues! g...

yes thats all i did. i cant remember the exact size bit i used but it was like 3or4 sizes larger than the stock size. the worst restriction i found was in the connection in the water pump housing. there was a large amount of casting slag there. there was plenty of materal there to be cleaned out. si...

i agree with you on the stock temp gauge setup, the gauge didnt work that well when i discovered that the thermostat was stuck open. hello again. i have found several sites that sell pistons for the 540 engine.. are the pistons diffrent in the vmax vs the xl-v the srv 540 or the vk 540? i know these are air cooled are the pistons interchangeable?
