Re: 81 SRX play in the steering.
My front end was in bad shape and when I took it apart it got looser. I took a 1/2" drill bit and drilled out all the pivots and then made each inner bushing on the lathe. The other way to deal with it, there is someone on Vintage sleds classifieds that is selling full replacement inner and out...

Re: Oil Pump Examination
If you are running the stock 1983 oil pump and premixing the fuel to 40:1 your total mix has to be like 20:1 or less. Way to much oil for me.

Oil Pump Examination
I like to know how things work, probably like many on this site. I have often wondered how Yamaha reduced the oil flow on the updated or red dote oil pumps. I have been running the original pump and going through quarts of oil this winter. I had a spare red dot pump but found the circle the cable at...

Re: Polaris clutch on a VMAX
I have been working with clutching this year and I am using the set up that sxr1000 has pictured only with a Comet 108. I hope this information helps others get in the ball park with a lot less time then I have into my set up. I am using a Dayco Max 1105 belt that many Polaris models use. The second...

Re: The Infamous 1983 Pump Drive Gear seal for the water pump !
OK, I am a bit slow I now see where sxr1000 said the 84 and up housing needs the 25x44x7 seal. I tried the 83 housing with the new seals and I was getting some water in the oil. When I took it apart last night, I found one of the springs off the new seal closest to the bearing. I believe the seal da...

Re: The Infamous 1983 Pump Drive Gear seal for the water pump !
So,is there any advantage to updating from a 1983 to a 1984 or newer housing? Looks like the seals for the update or later years are also discontinued.

Flywheel Weight
As I have been in and out of the flywheel side of the engine, I have been wondering about the heavy weight on the flywheel. I know the early SRX story about problems with clutch wear and the added flywheel weight helped the problem. Has anyone played with the flywheel weight on the 540 engines? I kn...

Re: 83 lights???
Found the problem last night. Decided to uncoil the wire on the lighting coil. In the first four feet found the wire on the outside edge had worn into the steel laminated legs of the coil and was half way through the wire. Seems the little cardboard protectors that go between the coil wire and coil ...

83 lights???
Have a 1983 Vmax I have been working on for years now. I have put around 500 miles on the Vmax this year and it has developed a problem with the lights being dim all the time. So, I check the stator and the lighting coil checks out to the specs for resistence. Next, I took the light wire (yellow) ap...

Re: Comet Clutch Rebuilding questions ?
Use the red locktite and I use a 4' bar on my homemade spider tool to tighten. I have seen the clutch spider spin off and I have seen the "fixed" sheave spin off and it is not pretty.
