probably a faulty thermostat! just remove it and make sure you warm up the engine before you drive it hard 3 to 5 mnutes, and check the antifreeze with a tester to make sure the mixture is right. Its the water that cools the engine not the antifreeze. Too much antifreeze and not enough water will ma...

And make sure the fuel pump is put together correctly just in case there was a ...

had the same thing happen to mine and the fuel pump diaphram had a hole in it and the gas drains into the bottom end of the motor. Mine was on one side and one pipe filled with fuel. I rebuilt both fuel pumps since and all is good fuel wise.

Since the engine is out of the sled a consideration about reliability would be the gearcase assembly, Mine had 7000 miles on it and my case needed work all new bearings and seals were replaced. There was alot of wear believe me!!! If you look in the MY PROJECT section look for 1985 vmax and look at ...

How bad is it flooding, is there gas coming out of the pipes . If your engine is filling up with fuel then you need to rebuild your fuel pumps most of the older sleds should get diaphragm kits changed. There just thin plastic discs and do wear out or deterioate.

I would also clean the pilot jets in both carburetors the holes are tiny and when they plug up your sled will run but only after 1/3 throttle like 3000 to 3500 . It will run lean at low rpm but not bad once in the midrange.
